Research Focus

It is well-known that materials at nanometer scale exhibit novel properties. Needless to say, the high surface area to volume ratio plays a significant role in the properties and usefulness of a nano-product. Electrospinning process is perhaps the most promising of all nanotechnologies, in terms of versatility and cost, to produce nanofibers. The ability of electrospinning process to mass-produce continuous fibers with nanometer scale diameter of different materials may provide solutions to global issues ranging from healthcare, environmental issue to energy. Preliminary studies have shown promising results in some of these fields. It is clear that each of these global issues find some common solutions in the electrospinning process. Hence, our team has adopted a multi-disciplinary approach addressing the various issues. The versatility and the commercial value of electrospinning are being appreciated by both the academic community and the industries. This is one of the few technologies where research breakthroughs can be quickly translated into market products. Current knowledge on electrospinning and nanofibers has seen applications in some commercial products and many other potential applications identified in diverse fields. Greater understanding of the process and nanofibers will lead to more applications being identified or sold in the market. Any breakthrough in nanotechnologies such as electrospinning will contribute both to the intellectual knowledge of local R & D as well as creating higher value-added products.
