9th Asian Cyclodextrin Conference (9ACC), 14 - 17 December 2017

ACC focuses on all aspects of cyclodextrin research and aims to construct strong partnerships centred in Asian and Oceanian regions. This year, 9ACC was co-organized by the Department of Biomedical Engineering, NUS and the Biomedical Engineering Society (Singapore), and held at NUS University Hall Auditorium.

BME student won Best Poster Award at 5th Asia-Korea Conference on Science and Technology 2017 (AKC2017)

Congratulations to Ms Lim Su Bin! AKC is the signature event for Korean Scientists and Engineers Association Chapters in Asia-Pacific region and this year it was organized under the theme, "The Fourth Industrial Revolution in Asia-Innovations of Tomorrow".

Sweeping win at EMedic Global 2017

Our department won 4 out of 6 awards at an international student competition dedicated to promoting client-centered inventions in the field of biomedical engineering.

Recipient of "RAPS The Community Leadership" Award

Congratulations to Ms Jacqueline Monteiro, who is one of our DCC (Department Consultative Committee) member, for being awarded the inaugural "RAPS The Community Leadership" Award!

This award recognizes Regulatory Affairs Professionals Society (RAPS) members who have built networks, supported regulatory professionals in their communities and partnered with other organizations to further the profession.

Dr Chen Chia-Hung and Mr Dinh Ngoc Duy featured on Wiley's YouTube video

Dr Chen's and Mr Dinh's work on a novel high throughput light-directed assembly method at the microscale has been featured in a YouTube video. Dr Chen is currently in charge of the Integrated Microfluidic Biotechnology Lab

BME postgraduate received Toshihiko Tokizane Memorial Award

Congratulation to Mr Andy Tay for being awarded the Toshihiko Tokizane Memorial Award for his thesis at the Japan Neuroscience Society meeting! This Award applauds excellent graduate studies in the field of neuroscience and thereby encourages young researchers and promotes further development of research in the field.

Andy also has recently received a scholarship from the Phi Beta Kappa Association in UCLA and a travel award from the New York Academy of Sciences for his idea to use microfluidics in food related technologies. He is currently pursuing his PhD in UCLA.

Professor James Goh elected as an AAET Fellow

The Fellowship of the ASEAN Academy of Engineering and Technology (AAET) is awarded to eminent individuals from academia, research institutes, industry, and government who have demonstrated successful leadership or outstanding contributions to engineering and technology, and play an important role in the overall development of the ASEAN region.

Previous recipients of this Fellowship in the Faculty of Engineering includes: Prof Poo Aun Neow, Prof Hang Chang Chieh, Prof Seeram Ramakrishna, Prof Chew Yong Tian, Prof Chou Siau Kiang, Prof Nhan Phan-Thien and Assoc Prof Chau Fook Siong. Prof James Goh was elected as a Fellow of AAET on the 10th June 2017.

IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Awards 2017

Dr Raye Yeow and his team was selected for the IES Prestigious Engineering Achievement Awards 2017, which was presented at the World Engineers Summit on 20th July 2017 by Mr. Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for the Environment and Water Resources. They were awarded in the Applied Research category for the Soft Robotic Glove by Yap Hong Kai, as well as two awards in the IES Young Creators category for the Soft Robotic Sock by Low Fanzhe and the Soft Robotic Nose by Gokula Krishnan.

BME graduate student awarded at 9th International Conference On Materials For Advanced Technologies

Congratulations to Mr Yeo Joo Chuan for being conferred the MRS-S Graduate Student Award at ICMAT 2017 attended by over 2,300 delegates. Joo Chuan is a PhD student of Prof Lim Chwee Teck and works on wearable microfluidic sensors. The “2017 MRS-S Graduate Student Award” endeavours to honour and encourage graduate students whose academic achievements and materials research showcase a high level of excellence and distinction. The Awards are conferred to students with exceptional ability and who exhibit potential for significant future achievements in materials research. Joo Chuan’s research work was shortlisted to present to an international panel of judges and was favourably selected as one of the five recipients of the MRS-S Graduate Student Award.

BME Showcase'17

The Department held the inaugural BME Showcase on 9th May 2017, at NUS Residential College 4. Organised by the Biomedical Engineering Industry Alliance (BMEIA) and the Department of Biomedical Engineering, the event serves to showcase the research, entrepreneurial activities and academic achievements of Biomedical Engineering staff and students, and foster interaction with industry.

NUS Engineering Open House 2017

Our annual outreach programme during the Engineering Open House saw great success with double the number of attendees as compared to previous year. We were heartened by all the positive feedback received from the parents and pre-U students.

Thanks to Dr. James Kah and his team for heading this event and a big thanks to our alumni as well who came down to share their insights and experiences!

Two BME faculty members won ATEA at University Awards 2017

Congratulation to Dr Alberto Corrias and Dr James Kah on winning the Annual Teaching Excellence Award during University Awards 2017! The ATEA is awarded to faculty members who have displayed a high level of commitment to their teaching.

FlexoSense, winner of IDTechEx Launchpad, will be showcased in Berlin

Co-founded by Professor Lim Chwee Teck and graduate student Mr Yeo Joo Chuan, FlexoSense will be demonstrating its flexible sensor technology solutions for rehabilitative devices and lifestyle products at the IDTechEx Show in Berlin, Germany, from 10-11 May 2017.

The IDTechEx Show is an exhibition which showcases emerging technologies and provides a networking platform for over 200 exhibiting companies from 61 countries.

Publication in Nature

Professor Lim Chwee Teck from the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Mechanobiology Institute at NUS, in collaboration with researchers from Institut Jacques Monod (France) and Oxford University (UK), have discovered the primary mechanism driving the extrusion of dying cells from epithelial monolayers. This work has been published in Nature.

BME Professor conferred NUSS Professorship

Professor Lim Chwee Teck will be appointed as NUSS Professor from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2020. This award is in recognition of Prof Lim’s international research reputation and academic leadership.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at NUS has successfully organized the Workshop on Bioengineering 2017. The workshop is a key activity of the Asian Dean’s Forum (ADF).

NUS Open House 2017, 11th March 2017

An energy-filled Saturday as our BME Outreach Committee and student volunteers manned the BME booth. They addressed questions ranging from curriculum contents to job prospects and from Student Exchange Programmes to the recently drafted Three Pathways - Research, Entrepreneurship, Professional - for Engineering undergraduates.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering at NUS has successfully organized the Workshop on Bioengineering 2017. The workshop is a key activity of the Asian Dean’s Forum (ADF).

BME received Commitment Award from NUS OSHE

The Department of Biomedical Engineering has been awarded the Commitment Award for Safety & Health Performance by the Office of Safety, Health & Environment. The award will be presented during the NUSSHA Ceremony 2017 which will be held in April at the University Cultural Centre.

PhD student clinches IPMC (International Precision Medicine Center) Prize 2017 in Seoul, Korea, on 19 January

Ms Lim Su Bin is recognised for her research which focuses on the microfluidic chip and is the world's first in using microfluidic flow to isolate selected cancer cells for single cell analysis. She received 3,000,000 won worth of prize money as support for global commercialisation, as well as the opportunity to present at the 2017 IPMC Conference. Further plans are in the work to commercialise the microfluidic chip for single cell analysis.
